The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) offers Ph.D. scholarships for candidates whose dissertation projects fit into one of the Graduate School’s new subject areas. Applicants of any nationality can apply for these Ph.D. scholarships.

In the focus of this unique structure of creative and innovative training are approximately 100 Junior Fellows from 27 African, American, Asian and European countries.

The University of Bayreuth is a hub of international and interdisciplinary research. African Studies have been a priority at the University of Bayreuth since its foundation in 1975. The Bayreuth International Graduate School of African Studies (BIGSAS) brings together African and European academic networks and fosters partnership not only between the University of Bayreuth and its six Partner Universities in Africa but also among universities in Africa.

Course Level:  Scholarships are available for pursuing a Ph.D. degree.

Study Subject: BIGSAS invites applications from candidates whose dissertation project fits into one of the Graduate School’s current Research Areas. The Research Areas:

  • Uncertainty, Innovation and Competing Orders in Africa
  • Knowledge, Communication, and Communities in Motion
  • Negotiating Change: Discourses, Politics, and Practices of Development

Scholarship can be taken in Germany

Scholarship Award: BIGSAS offers a limited number of scholarships of EUR 1,200 per month for the period of three years.

Eligibility Criteria: The following criteria must be met in order for applicants to be eligible for these scholarships:

Applicants must have a very good Master’s Degree in one of the disciplines represented at the Graduate School. Applications may be sent in German, English or French, the working language of BIGSAS is English

Eligible Nationalities: Applicants of any nationality can apply for these Ph.D. scholarships.

Entrance Requirements: Applicants can apply to BIGSAS if they hold a Master’s or equivalent degree in the Humanities with a very good result and if they plan a Ph.D. project on Africa – regardless of nationality, place of residence, age etc.

English language Requirements: Applications may be sent in German, English or French, the working language of BIGSAS is English.
