Gates Cambridge Scholarships UK for International Students

Gates Cambridge Scholarships are highly competitive full-cost scholarships. They are awarded to outstanding applicants from countries outside the UK to pursue a full-time postgraduate degree in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

Subjects Offered: Following Subject are offered under gates Cambridge Scholarship

PhD, MSc or MLitt, or a one year postgraduate course in any subject available at the University of Cambridge.

Degree Level: PhD, MSc or MLitt, or a one year postgraduate course

Eligibility Criteria:

You can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship if you are:

  • A citizen of any country outside the United Kingdom.
  • Applying to pursue one of the following full-time residential courses of study at the University of Cambridge: PhD (three year research-only degree); MSc or MLitt (two year research-only degree); or a one year postgraduate course (e.g. MPhil, LLM, MASt, Diploma, MBA etc.)
  • OR already a student at Cambridge and want to apply for a new postgraduate course. For example, if you are studying for an MPhil you can apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to do a PhD. However, if you have already started a course, you cannot apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to fund the rest of it.
  • OR already a Gates Cambridge Scholar and want to apply for a second Scholarship. You must apply by the second, international deadline and go through the same process of departmental ranking, shortlisting and interviewing as all other candidates.

Gates Cambridge Scholarship Benefit:

The Gates Cambridge Scholarship is one of the most generous international scholarships available. It covers the following costs:

  • Core components:
    • the University Composition Fee at the appropriate rate*
    • a maintenance allowance for a single student (£14,600 for 12 months at the 2016-17 rate; pro rata for courses shorter than 12 months)
    • one economy single airfare at both the beginning and end of the course
    • inbound visa costs & associated NHS surcharge costs
  • Discretionary components
    • Academic development funding – from £500 to £1,500, dependent on the length of your course, to attend conferences and courses.
    • Family allowance – up to £10,120 for a first child and up to £4,320 for a second child (2016-17 rate). No funding is provided for a partner.
    • Fieldwork – you may apply to keep up to your normal maintenance allowance while on fieldwork as part of your PhD.
    • Hardship funding – for unforeseen difficulties
    • Maternity/Paternity funding – should you require it, you may apply to intermit your studies for up to 6 months and continue to receive your maintenance allowance during this time
    • Some fourth year funding for PhD Scholars may be provided**

Application Procedure: 

  • Applicants apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship and admission to their chosen postgraduate course at the University of Cambridge and a Cambridge College via the Graduate Admissions Office, using the GRADSAF form and supporting documents.
  • It is not possible to apply for a Gates Cambridge Scholarship without applying to the University of Cambridge. You must apply for admission as a postgraduate student to the University of Cambridge and a Gates Cambridge Scholarship at the same time, using the one application pack.
  • The Personal Statement is used by the Gates Cambridge Shortlisting Committees to distinguish between candidates who have been highly ranked by departments on academic grounds.

Application Deadlines

Applications will open on 1 September 2016 for entry in October 2017. There are two Gates Cambridge application deadlines: 12 October 2016 (US citizens resident in the USA) and 7 December 2016 (all other eligible applicants). Further details are available from our deadlines page.

Gates Cambridge ScholarshipThe Gates Cambridge Scholarships were established by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000 with a $210 million endowment to enable outstanding graduate students from outside the United Kingdom to study at the University of Cambridge. The awardees are given funding for postgraduate study at the University for the duration of the degree. The award includes all tuition costs and a maintenance allowance, currently £13,300, and a return economy airfare. Scholars are also able to access travel funds for conferences, have exclusive use of recreational and social facilities, and participate in an annual retreat to the lake district. The first scholars arrived at Cambridge in October 2001, and the Scholarship celebrated its 10th anniversary in July 2010.
